The dogs loved Sarah first. Lottie slept

beside her bed, curled in a soft circle, and Nick

leaned his face on the covers in die morning,

watching for the first sign that Sarah was awake.

No one knew where Seal slept. Seal was a roamer.

Sarah's collection of shells sat on the window-

sill.

"A scallop," she told us, picking up the shells

one by one, "a sea clam, an oyster, a razor clam.

And a conch shell. If you put it to your ear you

can hear the sea." She put it to Caleb's ear, then

mine. Papa listened, too. Then Sarah listened

once more, with a look so sad and far away that

Caleb leaned against me.

"At least Sarah can hear the sea," he

whispered.

YMCA Skatepark Project

I think a skatepark would be great!  I love to skateboard and being able to use this park will make it more fun.  I hope we raise the money needed to build this park.  My friends and I are looking forward to doing this this summer.  The fund-raiser I am helping with is giving quarters to my school. The school that raises the most money will get to have an end-of-the-year skatepark party.  I hope we win!

Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing

by Judy Blume

This is a picture from the book.   In your own words recall what happened at this point in the story.

They were at Bloomingdale’s in the children’s shoe department.  They had the help of Mr. Berman, the shoe salesman.  They had gotten their shoes from him before.  Mom really likes him.  Peter was first and wanted a pair of brown loafers.  Mr. Berman found a nice pair that fit well.  Mother said to “wrap them up”.  Then it was Fudge’s turn.  They had just gotten back from the dentist for Fudge.  He had knocked out his top two teeth and had them looked at by Dr. Brown.   Fudge needed a pair of brown-and-white saddle shoes.  When Mr. Berman returned from the back room with the pair of shoes Fudge yelled, “No! No shoes!”.  He began kicking and screaming with everyone in the store watching.  Mr. Berman managed to grab Fudge but was giving a kick in the face.  Fudge wanted a pair “like Pee-tah’s”.

Mother had a plan to have Peter try on a pair of saddle shoes to make Fudge think he was getting the same pair as Peter.  It worked and they left the store with one pair of loafers AND a pair of brown-and-white saddle shoes.
