Math Survey (for seventh grade - winter unit)

Different people have different attitudes about winter.  Using principles of sound data collection, work in groups of four to design a survey to answer the question, “What is the relationship between a person’s age and his/her attitudes about winter?”  You will organize and analyze the results to be posted, with an explanation, on the class web page about how to live better during the winter.

English Essay (for seventh grade)

(Given as a prewriting for the Should Rivers be Dammed? unit)

A government project will need all the land in your community.  Your whole family and community has been given six months to move.  After that time, everything will be destroyed and you can never return to the home you have known for most of your life.  What would your reaction be?  Free write about your feelings, what you would take with you, leave behind, what you would miss, etc.  How would it change your life?  Your parents’ life?

Science Risk/Benefit Analysis (eighth grade - Ghost town unit)

In this unit, you have studied the economics of Fayette, the iron smelting ghost town, and the environmental impacts of the smelting operation.  In groups of four, do a risk/benefit analysis.  First, list all of the benefits and all of the risks of the iron smelting operation. Next, rate the risks from 1 (insignificant risk) to 5 (significant risk) and rate the benefits from 1(insignificant benefit) to 5 (significant benefit).  Then, as individuals, think about the risks and benefits and the ratings and then write a two page essay commenting on this statement:  “The benefits of the iron smelting operation in Fayette, Michigan, outweighed the risks.”  A notebook of these risk/benefit analyses will be displayed in the visitor center at Fayette Historic State Park.

Social Studies Oral Presentation (seventh grade - Winter unit)

Our class will take a look at how people of northern Europe, particularly those living in cities, have taken steps to minimize the impacts of winter.  These are the topics we will consider:   housing, clothing, snow removal, public transportation, low light conditions, and celebration.  In groups of four, gather information about the topic you are assigned in anyway you can.  Prepare a five minute presentation for the class that summarizes your findings.  The presentation should include at least one visual.  Save your rough notes, references, presentation notes and visuals as you will use them later in the unit.
